How to Disassemble Old 1978-89 Mustang Seat Belts
- Remove the 8 bolts for the front seats and remove the seats. Save the bolts for re-installation.
- Remove the screws for the quarter panel trim. Save the screws for re-installation.
- Remove the seat belt retractor bolts.
- Remove the bolts for the seat belt shoulder hanger on the door post.
- Remove the bolts at the seat belt end on the rocker panel inside plastic sleeve.
- Cut the cable on the retractor going to the door jam (you will no longer need this) or remove the plunger and insert block of plug. The new retractor is web sensitive and doesn't require a release cable.
- Remove the old seat belt assembly. Remove the the plastic sleeve from the end, pulling the belt and hanger through the quarter panel trim.
- Remove the bolt on the buckle side near the console and remove the wire for the seat belt light (driver's side only). The new seat belt buckle does not come with a seat belt light wire.
How to Install New 1978-89 Mustang Seat Belts
- Be sure the new retractor is in the UP position and install the retractor bolt using Locktite.
- Install the belt and shoulder hanger through the quarter panel trim, installing the shoulder bolt.
- Install the plastic and bolt into the end belt.
- Re-install the quarter panels using the oroginal screws.
- Install the plastic and bolt for the new seat belt buckle near the console.
- Re-install seats using the original bolts.
